Indian Filmi Sangeet started with the film 'Alamara' in the year 1931. South Indian Filmi Music started with the tradition of 'Thyagaraj'. In bangla films, the music was given by R.C Badaal, Pankaj Malik and Timirbaran (the disciple of Baba Allauddin Khan) under the tradition of Baadal Khan, Girja Babu and gurudev Rabindra Nath Tagore (Writer of Geentanjali).

In Maharashtra, Music was grown up with the famous names like Alladia Khan, Pandit Vishnu Digambar Paluskar, Abdul Karim Khan and music directors were Govind Rao, Prof. B.R Devdhar and Keshav Rao Bhole.

Ghulam Haider and Kamal Das Gupta were Music Directors from Patiala Gharana, famous for Ustad Wahid Khan, Ustad Jhande Khan and Pandit Amar Nath.

The names of music directors like Basant Desai, Anil Biswas, Harish Chandra Bali, S.M Tripathi were very famous in Maharashtra. After that Naushad, C Ram Chandra, Husan Lal Bhagat Ram, S D Burman and Shankar Jai Kishan came into the limelight. During the year 1950, Music Directors like Roshan, Madan Mohan, Hemant Kumar, Salil Choudhary, Khayyam, Shyam Ji Ghanshyam Ji and Ravi continued to brighten the Indian Film Industry.

Music Director like O.P Nayyar, Lakshmikant Pyare Lal, R.D Burman, Bappi Lehri, Rajesh Roshan and Usha Khanna gave rememberable music in the industry.
